The ghats of Varanasi, a series of riverfront steps leading down to the sacred Ganges River, are an iconic part of the city’s spiritual heritage.
Varanasi is home to 88 ghats, most of which are dedicated to bathing rituals and puja ceremonies, while two serve exclusively as cremation sites.
Most of these historic ghats were rebuilt during the 18th century, under the rule of the Marathas.
