The name “Kaal” signifies both time and death. It is believed that even death itself fears Kaal Bhairav. According to mythology, Lord Shiva instructed Kaal Bhairav to travel across different places, but the sin of Brahmahatya (the act of beheading Lord Brahma) followed him in the form of a terrifying woman. When Kaal Bhairav reached Varanasi, Brahma’s severed head finally fell to the ground at a sacred site known as “Kapal Mochan Teerth”, freeing him from the sin. Lord Shiva then declared that Kaal Bhairav would eternally reside in Varanasi, protecting his devotees and absolving them of their sins.
